Remember that slogan? It was big in the … early ’90s I guess. We liked our slogans back then. Peace, love, & (insert whatever here).
Simple Mom has a great post on ways to be greener at home, and it got me thinking about the stuff we do. I was actually surprised at how much of the stuff on her list we do. I don’t consider myself a major offender when it comes to the environment, but we do our part to fill up the landfills, you know?
My absolute favorite thing, of course, has been planting the garden. I am addicted to it. I love to see the progress that has been made in even just one day. Especially now that I have actual tomatoes and jalapenos growing. It makes me want to write folk songs: Sittin’ in the sun, swanky little plants, you’ll soon be in our bellies.
Reusable shopping bags are getting bigger, which I love. We stop getting annoyed looks at the grocery store from the baggers (srsly, I’d rather bag myself), at least about the bags we hand them. Mostly we use Envirosax but we also have bags from Central Market, Trader Joe’s, and an awesome (but too small to be practical for groceries) pear-print Orla Kiely bag from Target, plus bags from my husband’s work. Giving out bags is the cool thing now, of course. The worst part is forgetting a bag though, so I try to have one stashed in my purse at all times.
There’s also using real plates/utensils/cups at work, cloth diapering, breastfeeding, utilizing the farmer’s market, having our house powered by wind, paying bills online, donating and/or selling stuff on consignment, and of course, cooking from scratch. We may not be doing all we can do, but we’re doing something, and that is something.
