I’m a little behind. You could blame it on the holidays, but mostly I just dropped the ball.

I’ve finally chosen the books for the 2010 group. Please note that you are NOT required to read all of the books to join the group, although it would be fun to hear the opinions of those who are reading outside their comfort genre. This year I didn’t just stick with regular fiction and threw in some nonfiction and memoir.

  • Ella Minnow Pea, Mark Dunn (January 1 – March 5)
  • The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Michael Pollen (March 19 – May 21)
  • Lamb, Christopher Moore (June 4 – July 16)
  • It Sucked and Then I Cried, Heather Armstrong (July 30 – August 27)
  • Unaccustomed Earth, Jhumpa Lahiri (September 22 – October 10)
  • Soulless, Gail Carriger (November 5 – December 31)

These will all be available in paperback by the time we read them (Armstrong’s book will be in paperback in March), and they’re all available for really cheap either on Amazon’s used section or Half.com.

I’m still looking for the best way for us to discuss the books. For now, if you think you’re going to take part in any of the book readings, please leave a comment. Be sure to let me know what format for discussion would work best for you (forums, goodreads, facebook, etc.).

Thanks to everyone for suggesting books! The lucky person who will be getting a copy of all six books from me is Jasie. Hooray!

I read Christopher Moore’s LAMB when it came out in 2003, and it’s still one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. I think Moore’s got a rare sort of literary comic genius, at least I say so on the basis of that novel. I keep meaning to read some of his other stuff–and he’s got a lot of other stuff–but I think I’m afraid it won’t be as clever, funny, or downright enjoyable as LAMB, and so I’m putting off the potential disappointment. I really just have to grow a pair and read one of his other novels so I’ll really know if he’s a one-shot dude or if he’s really got a knack for writing interesting fiction that manages to pull off one of the hardest writerly tricks of all: making smart people laugh without requiring them to check their brain at the door. Sedaris has this gift too (most notably demonstrated in ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY).

Some great reads there and sounds like fun! Let me know how you decide to discuss – I’d love to participate. Happy new year!

I might try to take part in some! I’m reading My Sister’s Keeper at the moment and am really into it, but I’ll see if I can get it done quick enough to start reading the first one with you! I don’t have a goodreads account or a facebook. I might consider joining goodreads if it’s easy enough though! I’ve never looked into it.

  4. Oh my goodness! I won! I can’t believe I didn’t see this until now… been so busy with the holidays and various things that I didn’t get around to checking all my bloggy-blogs until this afternoon.

I’ll make it easy for you, though. I already own Omnivore’s Dilemma, but hadn’t had a chance to read it yet. I own Lamb, as well, but am looking forward to reading through it again (I read it back in 05 or so).

@Meg, the books showed up in the mail this weekend! Thanks again! I was reading the backs and I’m pretty excited to dive into some fun reading outside of my usual fare. :)

Hey, I finally finished reading My Sister’s Keeper, so I started on Ella Minnow Pea! Did you ever figure out how best to discuss the books?

I’ve put together a forum that should have better security than the one I tried to do last year. I hope that will work better, especially because I’m going to be posting reminders more often. I’ll be writing an update on the group with details on joining the forum this week :)
