The January 2010 DC challenge was hosted by Cuppy of Cuppylicious and she chose a delicious Thai-inspired recipe for Pork Satay from the book 1000 Recipes by Martha Day.
Over the years my husband and I have made satay a variety of different ways, and we always love it. This month’s challenge proved to be no exception, because even though it wasn’t an authentic Thai satay recipe, we enjoyed it.
We followed the longer version of the marinade, because I had all the ingredients on hand and I saw no reason not to. It really isn’t any more time consuming, especially if you have a food processor to mix up the marinade. I also made peanut sauce and a tamarind sauce – I had gotten a large jar of tamarind concentrate a while ago and I need excuses to use it up.
The peanut sauce was good, although not as spicy as we normally make it. The tamarind sauce was interesting, but very strong and sweet. It worked best in small doses, while I could slop on the peanut sauce to my heart’s content.
Served simply with jasmine rice and Brussels sprouts (which also tasted great with the sauces!), this was a good solid meal. I don’t know if I’ll be adding these particular recipes to my files, but I always love another opportunity to eat satay.

It seems like you enjoyed it and the photo looks really appealing and you had sprouts they would so well with the peanut sauce great choice. Cheers from Audax in Sydney Australia.

Great job with the challenge! I like that you used the tamarind sauce as well as the peanut sauce. I wanted to make more sauces but for only 3 of us I was worried about too much! I’ll definitely have to try the tamarind sauce and see if my little one likes that any better than the peanut, next time I make satay

Nice job.. We were not blown away by the satay – I followed the recipe when my instincts told me to make changes and I wish I had….

Yeah, we weren’t blown away either but it wasn’t horrible to me. I did make some changes to the peanut sauce but I can’t remember what they are, aside from adding more spice.

Your presentation is amazing! I’m also impressed that you made 2 sauces and the long marinade. Now I feel lazy… Good work.

I’m with you on the satay recipe this month — but the challenge was fun. And I was pleasantly surprised by the tamarind sauce.
Also happy to have found your blog! Will definitely be poking around here. Good stuff.
