We haven’t entirely stuck to our menu plan, but our Eat Local challenge is still chugging along. One thing I do wish I could figure out is where to draw the line on restaurants. For example, I know Arby’s (where my husband lunched on Friday - tsk!) is out, but what about the place I got [...] Thanks to Addie Broyles of the Statesman, I was able to attend an absinthe tasting at Peche, a hip little bar and restaurant in downtown Austin. I had never had absinthe before - it only recently became legal in the United States, and the only other place I’ve seen it is in giant bottles at [...] Making tiramisu from scratch is not something to be taken lightly. The February 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Aparna of My Diverse Kitchen and Deeba of Passionate About Baking. They chose Tiramisu as the challenge for the month. Their challenge recipe is based on recipes from The Washington Post, Cordon Bleu at Home [...] On my second trip to San Francisco last November I devoured My Life in France. The delayed flight out of LAX and lack of WiFi there made it easy to fall into Julia Child’s memories. That night I found myself at Alamo Square Seafood, and if there was anything to convince me of how my life [...] After making last month’s marmalade, I was already looking forward to whatever would be chosen for February. I was pleasantly surprised when it was revealed we needed to work with carrots. Carrots are trickier to can using the water bath method because you have to worry about the acidity levels and the danger of botulism. Eep. But [...]  |
