This post is part of my ongoing engagement with Netflix as part of their Stream Team.
Right about now is the time when I am scrolling through Instagram or Facebook, seeing gorgeous photos of vacations on beaches, islands, and other faraway destinations. While I’m supervising my kids fight over who gets to play with which cars.
Summer vacation hasn’t quite been a thing for us. Before the little one came we spent a week in a cabin in Wisconsin, but otherwise our summer travel has been limited to visiting family. Visiting family is not a vacation, because even though we’re in another city and not working, we spend every second trying to cram in visits to old friends and favorite haunts. So relaxing.
It’s not that we wouldn’t want to go on vacation, but we also like paying our bills and buying groceries for the year. My son doesn’t quite understand this, as he has just requested we visit Tokyo to see the poop museum, which, luckily for me, is an exhibit that ended two years ago. And if we wanted to be tired, yell at each other, and gripe about the food, we could just do that at home. Because we’ve got that one down.
In order to survive my kids’ constant bickering and delightful whining about their injustices, I spend the time after they go to bed losing myself in a few Netflix shows. Except sometimes when they don’t go to sleep, and we have to be ninjas with the remote to pause Orange is the New Black at a non-inappropriate-for-a-child’s-eyes moment. (It’s kinda hard.)
You know how when you have children, you sometimes hide to eat chocolate you don’t want them to know about, or to use the toilet? It’s starting to get that way for streaming.
Not that there’s anything wrong with that. OK, you probably shouldn’t be watching Netflix during a work meeting. Don’t do that. I am not responsible for you getting fired. But sometimes we need just five minutes of quiet time to be able to watch our show.
At least, until the next vacation request comes through from the kids. They tell me the Great Wall of China is pretty wonderful this time of year.
