how to make homemade chicken broth

Save money and reduce food waste by learning how to make homemade chicken broth. Then use it anywhere you'd use boxed broth or stock.

Let’s get started!

Key Ingredients

01 Chicken bones

02 Carrots

03 Onions

04 Celery

Flour Bag
Flour Bowl

05 Herbs

06 Water

Add chicken bones, chopped veggies, herbs, salt, and peppercorns to a large pot.

01

Add enough water to cover everything — about 12 cups (3 quarts).

02

Place over high heat, cover, and bring to a boil.

03

Once boiling, reduce heat and let simmer for 2-3 hours, or longer for a richer broth.

04

Once chicken and vegetables have broken down and liquid is reduced, remove from heat and let cool.

05

Use tongs or a skimmer to remove large pieces of vegetables and chicken.

06

Pour broth into a mesh strainer set over a bowl to catch small bits of herbs and bone.

07

Ladle into jars or other reusable containers. If freezing, leave 2 inches at the top.

08

Let cool to room temperature before placing in fridge or freezer.
