Making an affogato at home is incredibly easy. This post is brought to you by iCoffee.

I take coffee pretty much any way I can get it. In Austin we’re lucky to have lots of independent coffee shops and small business coffee roasters keeping the city of creatives, entrepreneurs, students, and tech geeks caffeinated. Maybe it’s the coffee that helps so many new businesses, especially restaurants, pop up seemingly every week.

To go with the coffee, we’ve also had a few ice cream places join us in the last year or so. Specifically, gelato has been taking over our dessert routines, and I’m all for it. Especially when they serve up affogato, the wonderful pairing of coffee (usually espresso) with gelato.

While my taste buds would love it if I visited our gelato shops on the regular, my wallet (and frankly, my car mileage) doesn’t approve, so I wanted to make my own affogato at home. Fortunately, with the use of the iCoffee it’s ready in less time than it would take me to put on my shoes and find my keys.

I recently tried out the iCoffee Express at home and it immediately supplanted our previous Keurig brewer. Aside from the ease of use — you pour in as much water as you want for your cup and only have one button to press — it makes a much smoother cup of coffee. While I often make coffee using pour-over methods, you can’t really beat the convenience factor of the iCoffee system.

Happily, it also comes with its own reusable pod capsule, so I can use my favorite local beans in my daily cup.

Check out the video I made below to see the iCoffee in action:

For my affogato I like to use straciatella gelato, which has shreds of chocolate throughout. It’s about five thousand times better than your standard chocolate chip ice cream and makes for a great pairing with the full-bodied coffee.

Once you make affogato at home, you won’t bother with any other kind of ice cream sundae.
