It’s Here: Where Slow Food and Whole Food Meet

September 8, 2014 / General

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links.

A few months ago, I was asked to participate in a slow cooker cookbook project. I’m pleased to announce that the cookbook is ready for purchase, and it’s full of great recipes and beautiful photos. Called Where Slow Food and Whole Food Meet, this cookbook was created with busy families without a lot of resources in mind.

Where Slow Food and Whole Food Meet

The book release coincides with Hunger Action Month, a nationwide campaign mobilizing the public to take action on the issue of hunger. All proceeds from the sale of this book go toward the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, which will be able to provide more meals for needy families. You can buy the book on Amazon right here.

In addition, Feeding America food banks from across the country are giving the ebook version as a free gift to their donors. If you make a donation you will be given the ebook as a free gift! How great is that? Donate right now and get your free ebook by clicking here.

Some great sponsors have decided to help out as well! San Miguel Produce, Grimmway Farms, and Old Oak Farms by RPE Produce  are making some big contributions to help end hunger. They are each contributing food to their local food banks AND they are giving $5 for every print copy of the book sold. They’re also donating two print copies of each book for us contributors to give away. Plus, Hamilton Beach has provided slow cookers that many of the participating bloggers (including me!) are giving away!

Want even more?

The co-editors of the book, Christine and Jennifer, are also giving away one prize of free carrots for a year from Grimmway Farms, one prize of free greens for a year from San Miguel and a potato prize pack from Old Oak Farms by RPE Produce including 40 pounds of potatoes and 1 Bamboo Bowl, 1 cutting board, 1 pepper mill, 1 measuring spoon set, 1 recipe booklet, 1 about potatoes booklet. Visit their blogs to enter to win those very special prizes.

Pot Roast! With all the fixings of course–green beans, potatoes, carrots. It always makes the home smell soooo good!

This is such a great project, Megan! My favorite slow cooker recipe is chicken and dumplings. Even in the dead of summer, I could eat it every week for dinner.

Congrats on the book. What a great project! My favorite thing to make in a slow cooker is chicken adobo. The sweet and salty pulled chicken is great all week over rice, salad, or noodles.

I use my (ancient) slowcooker for a lot of things – reducing tomatoes down to paste for canning, pot roast, beans, and lots of soups. I do my prep the night before, throw stuff in it in the morning, then come home to a lovely smelling house and a yummy dinner.

Vegetarian chili. Or applesauce. And in the summer, I sometimes make no-knead bread in the slow-cooker. The crust isn’t as nice as from the oven, but it’s a passable loaf without having to heat up the kitchen with the oven.

My favorite slow cooker recipe is breakfast casserole. I get about three slow cookers going with different variations for Christmas morning….we have gluten-free members in my family and of course we have some that don’t like mushrooms, green peppers, etc., so everybody gets catered to and we love it!

My favorite thing to cook in the crockpot is a whole chicken patted with butter and topped with dry itialian salad dressing seasoning. You don’t use any water and after 8 hours on low you have a fall off the bone amazing bird. Then I take all the bones and add water and cook it overnight for stock. It’s the easiest and best way to cook a whole chicken.

I love my mom’s “chicken stuff”. It was made with cream of chicken soup, a whole chicken, dried basil and a little sour cream and pimentos at the end, all served over egg noodles. We were pretty poor when I was growing up, and this was an economical dish to make – except for the sour cream! My mom taught me with this dish, that you can always introduce a little luxury into your life, even if in very small amounts!

My favorite thing to make in the slow cooker is North Carolina Pulled Pork, I make it a whole lot through out the hot and sticky NYC summer. When it gets to the cooler months I start making it for tailgating, birthdays, family get togethers and any time I need to bring something to a potluck supper.

While I’ve had a slow cooker for a long time, I’m not very experienced with it. I don’t think I’ve made the same recipe twice, because I’m still searching for my favorite. I do enjoy making pot roast in it.
